BECOME A CERTIFIED CELPIP TEST RATER AT PARAGON TESTING ENTERPRISES

PARAGON TESTING ENTERPRISES is a major provider of English language proficiency testing services. As a newly created subsidiary of The University of British Columbia, PARAGON aims to make its tests a viable Canadian alternative for English language proficiency testing.

As our company is growing, we are looking to recruit both Speaking and Writing Test raters for our CELPIP English language test. This is an excellent opportunity to become involved with a dynamic and growing company that is working at establishing a respected name in the world of English language proficiency testing.

A typical rater works for around five to ten hours a week. Speaking and Writing Test raters work online so there is no travel involved and working times are flexible. Raters are paid a competitive rate for each assignment completed.

Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a short training program conducted online. Those who pass the certification test will receive an additional honorarium after completing 1-2 months of work. If you succeed in becoming a certified CELPIP rater, you can expect to receive rating assignments most weekends. Assignments are typically due on Wednesday.

The next CELPIP rater training and certification program is tentatively scheduled to begin very soon.

Requirements:

  • Canadian citizenship, residency, or work permit.
  • Undergraduate degree.
  • ESL teaching certification recognized by TESL Canada OR graduate training in language education OR graduate training in linguistics
  • 3 years of ESL teaching experience or 3 years experience in language education or 3 years experience in a linguistics related field.
  • Native speaking OR CLB 11/12.

Qualifications required

  • Educational Requirements: A University degree from a registered educational establishment is required. In addition, an Early Childhood Education qualification, Ontario teaching certification or TESL are preferred.
  • Language: Must be a native speaker of the English language with a strong command of both written and spoken English and grammar.

International Pharmacy Graduate Program, University of Toronto

Background

The International Pharmacy Graduate Program at the University of Toronto is looking for ELT Teaching Assistants for patient/pharmacist simulations in two courses: Patient Care (P.C.) Skills and the Self-Care Course.  In these simulations, the ELT TAs will play the role of the patient and offer immediate verbal feedback on the learners’ performance.  Feedback will focus on grammar, pronunciation, correct registers, profession specific language and non-verbal communication.  The ELT TA will be responsible for reviewing the cases prior to the role-play and at the standardization meeting the day of the role-play. Training sessions will be provided.

The time commitment for this position varies.  The IPG program runs sessions in November and December, February and March, May and June, and August and September with role-plays scheduled primarily on Thursday afternoons; but depending on space availability, the role-plays may be changed to Wednesday afternoons.  There may be some role-plays offered on the weekend for our online cohorts. The role-plays run from 12:30 to approximately 5 -5:30 pm depending on the size of the class.  There are approximately 25-30 role-play sessions per year.

Main responsibilities

  • Review cases prior to the role-play sessions
  • Attend standardization meetings prior to the role-play sessions
  • Play the role of the patient during role-play sessions
  • Offer verbal feedback to learners during role-play sessions
  • Invigilate learners as needed
  • Attend training sessions as needed

New College Summer Programs, University of Toronto

Background

For nearly 20 years, New College at the University of Toronto has run summer sessions of English language programs and activities camps for international youth between 12 and 18 years of age.  All students attend general English language classes in the morning while some also attend specialized English language classes in the afternoons.  All students participate in supervised, coordinated cultural activities after their classes and on weekends.

We are currently seeking enthusiastic, qualified individuals for the following summer position:

1. Senior Youth (15 – 18 years old) language instructor– General English Program
2. Junior Youth (12 – 14 years old) language instructor – General English Program

Main responsibilities

  • Using objectives-based curriculum and teacher-sourced materials to plan lessons for 3-hour classes per day
  • Focusing on oral and listening skills, but incorporating all skills and systems where appropriate
  • Assessing student skills through placement tests and project-based assignments
  • Maintaining attendance records
  • Completing evaluation forms for each student

Contract overview

At the rate of pay of $32.00 per hour, the contracts run from

a) July 1 – July 25 (inclusive of Canada Day holiday, 10:00 – 1:00, M-F)
b) July 8 – July 25  (10:00 – 1:00, M-F)
c) July 29 – Aug 23 (inclusive of Civic Day holiday,  10:00 – 1:00, M-F)
d) Aug 8 – Aug 23 ( 10:00 – 1:00, M-F)

with 4% vacation pay and 2 hours of marking. The possibility of extensions from a) and b) for c) and d) contracts is dependent on the teachers’ suitability and enrollment.

This position is ideal for current Ontario elementary and high school teachers with a passion for international students or TESL qualified instructors with international youth experience.  We are unable to provide employment opportunities beyond the summer.  However, many instructors return to this program every summer.
